Objective To study the expression of interleukin-18 binding protein a(IL-18BPa) and interleukin-18 binding protein c(IL-18BPc) in tumorou tissue and peri-tumorou tissue, and to explore the similarities and differences of the distribution of IL-18BPa and IL-18BPc in human primary hepatic carcinoma. Methods The expression of IL-18BPa and IL-18BPc was detected in the specimens of 34 cases of primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC) and 5 healthy hepatocellular tissues by immunohistochemical staining. Results The positive expression rate of IL-18BPa in tumorous tissue and peri-tumorous tissue was 34. 7% and 94. 11% ,but IL-18BPa was seldom expressed in normal liver tissue. IL-18BPa was overex-pressed in peri-tumorous tissues of primary hepatic carcinoma, that was significantly different compared with that in the other 2 groups( all P <0.01). The positive expression rate of IL-18BPc in tumorou tissue and peri-tumorou tissue was 85. 29% and 38. 24% ,and IL-18BPc was also seldom expressed in normal liver tissue. IL-18BPc was over expressed in tumorou tissues of primary hepatic carcinoma, that was significantly different compared with that in the other 2 groups (all P < 0. 01). Conclusion The over expression of IL-18BPa may be related to promote local angiogenesis in PHC. IL-18BPc somewhat plays a role in the occurrence and development process of PHC. So different subtypes of interleukin-18 binding protein have different roles and functions.
