What Shapes Female Graduate Students'Academic Aspirations? An In-depth Interview Study of Eight Master's Degree Students
This study explores factors influencing female master's students'academic aspirations in contemporary educational settings.Through in-depth interviews with eight female master's students from diverse disciplines, academic years, and institutions,we examined how gender identity shapes academic aspirations and career choices.Five essential factors emerged as significant influences:extrinsic motivations for pursuing graduate studies, insufficient academic confidence, gender bias from mentors,gender-based disparities in educational returns, and the absence of female academic role models.Academic aspiration serves as a crucial internal driver for pursuing scholarly careers.Enhancing female graduate students'academic aspirations and encouraging more women to pursue research careers requires coordinated efforts from individuals, higher educational institutions, and society at large.
