Beyond the"Alienation Paradox":A Critical Analysis of Establishing an Indigenous Talent Development System in Chinese Higher Education
The institutional framework for talent cultivation in higher education fundamentally shapes the nature and patterns of talent development. In China, most of these frameworks are transplanted models of Western systems. When implemented in the Chinese context, misinterpretations and inappropriate applications of Western"toolbox of practices"have led to multiple forms of institutional alienation:the narrowing of core institutional functions, the deviation towards auxiliary functions, and the over-generalization of derivative functions. This alienation stems from the interplay of multiple local factors, including cultural influences, resource constraints, the frequent overlap of multiple institutional systems across temporal and spatial dimensions, and the inherent laws of educational development. To address these adverse effects of institutional alienation, future reforms must return to a human-centered institutional design approach, dialectically adopting and applying valuable international experiences while building upon China's own educational practices.
