On the Integrity of Tang Dynasty Officials Seen from The Epitaph of LIU Zhao and its Enlightenment on Modern Governance
Clean governance has long been a fine tradition in Chinese civilization,with government officials being the primary ob-ject of such studying.Officials of Tang Dynasty,who were diligent and loyal in serving the people and the country,are typical ex-amples.Among them,Liu Zhao is an epitome of the clean and honest officials of Tang.Perusal of his epitaph shows three aspects of his honest and diligent deeds.In dealing with people,he was strict with himself while preserving moral integrity;In building the family traditions,he upheld the virtues of loyalty,filial piety,benevolence,righteousness,modesty and tolerance;In serving the government,he was clean and honest,never seeking private gains at the expense of the public interests.These of his deeds provide fine examples for all officials,and shed light on the development of clean governance trend in later generations.
