Zhi Yu's Literary Achievements and Academic Contributions
Zhi Yu,an important litterateur of the Western Jin Dynasty around the 4th century,has produced a wealthy number of writings throughout his life,but many of which unfortunately were no longer available after the Song Dynasty.The existing collec-tions of his works show that he has made great literary achievements,contributing fairly to the various styles of literary creation in China.Especially,his argumentative writings on rituals and politics are regarded as his most eloquent,most pragmatic,and most outstanding achievements.His academic contribution to literature can be found in the three literary pioneering works he has writ-ten:A Categorized Anthology of Poetry,the very first poetry anthology in China;On the Different Schools of Articles,the very first monograph which focuses on the differentiation of article styles;and A Catalogue of Bibliographies,the first collection of ancient Chinese writers.Of the three,the second one is of special significance and deserves highlight for its profound influence on the study of styles,and its contribution to literary theory in ancient China.Therefore,their author,Zhi Yu,should possess an impor-tant position in the history of Chinese literature,especially in the history of Chinese literary theory and literary criticism.
