A Preliminary Study on the Origin of the Stone Enclosure at the Baling Imperial Mausoleum
Through exploration and trial excavation of the Baling Mausoleum(the tomb of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, also known as the Jiangcun Great Tomb)and the Southern Mausoleum of Empress Bo,it was discovered that there is a stone enclosure surrounding them, constructed with a layer of river pebbles. The form of this stone enclosure differs from the traditional moat and wall used in the construction of imperial tombs, and is not a local tradition.By comparing it with the"stone enclosure tombs"in Xinjiang and the Mongolian Plateau,it is speculated that the stone enclosure at the Baling Mausoleum drew inspiration from the"stone enclosure tombs,"reflecting the integration of grassland cultural elements into the Han culture, which was a result of cultural exchanges and dissemination at that time. The personal thoughts and experiences of Emperor Wen played an important role in incorporating the cultural element of the"stone enclosure"into his mausoleum. The"distinctive"stone enclosure at the imperial mausoleum represents the reform and innovation of the imperial tomb structure during the Han Dynasty, and is another evidence of the cultural communications between the Yellow River basin,Xinjiang, and the Mongolian Plateau.
