An Examination of the Life of Shangguan Hong—On the Identity Recognition of Northern Scholars in the Late Sui Dynasty
According to the research on Shangguan Waner's tomb epitaph, which includes information about her great-grandfather,Shangguan Hong, and other literature,it is known that Shangguan Hong hailed from Shanggui in Tianshui. He gained fame in his early years as a literary figure, and held important positions during the reign of Emperor Wendi of the Sui Dynasty.During the reign of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty,Shangguan Hong was active in the political center of Jiangnan. He served as the deputy supervisor of Jiangdu Palace and the assistant to Wang Shichong, and was closely associated with northern military generals such as Tuwan Xu from Dai County and Yu Juluo from Hongnongxiagui. After the Jiangdu rebellion,Shangguan Hong was killed by Chen Leng, and his death had much to do with his political identity and stance during the late Sui Dynasty. As a close confidant of Emperor Yangdi of Sui and a literary figure,Shangguan Hong also had close ties with members of the northern military group. This dual identity might have been the root of his doomed fate during the late Sui Dynasty.
