Neo-feudalism and Its Historical Mysteries:Examining Jodi Dean's Neo-feudalism from Historical Materialism
Among the many schools of thought that proposed the neo-feudalism,the neo-fudalism of American Marxist political scholar Jodi Dean stands out.She initially proposed"communicative capitalism"—a more advanced concept compared to traditional capitalism, but in her early 21st century intellectual develop-ment,she reflected a shift from political criticism to communicative political economy criticism. After seeing the problem of capitalism falling into a worse historical stage mentioned by Mackenzie Wark in Capital Is Dead, she also felt that contemporary capitalism may have declined and entered a stage of neo-feudalism.Her definition of neo-feudalism,however,is based on a political understanding, which leads her to propose that neo-feudalism has a division of power, new lords and new serfs, hinterlandization, and catastrophic anxiety. If we examine Jodi Dean's neo-feudalism from the perspective of Marx's historical materialism,we can see that her neo-feudalism bears traces of abstract politics and lacks the ability to analyze the exploitation and inequali-ty of contemporary capitalism in terms of a concrete critique of political economy. Therefore,it is also difficult to understand that the core of neo-feudalism is not politics, but the historical result of turning clouded territo-ries into private ownership.
