Historical Thinking between Ancient and Modern Times,China and the West
The Chinese and Western historiographical traditions are rooted in the culturally diverse systems at both ends of the Eurasian continent,and the historical transformation under the influence of the Scientif-ic Revolution means the updating of ideas from the agricultural age to the industrial age.There are no fixed notions of Eastern and Western.The historiography of both China and the West is an evolving process of thinking that is constantly changing.The most profound difference and the most intense transformation in the traditional Chinese and Western historiography lie in the key aspects of ancient/modern and Chinese/Western relations,which deserves repeatedly pondering and questioning.This group of special topic papers focuses on the characteristics of historical thinking,emphasizing the comparison and mutual reflection be-tween Chinese and Western perspectives.Two of the articles focus on the differences between ancient and modern times,examining the deep presuppositions of historians between science and humanities,or turning their attention to the formal aspects of historical representation.They meticulously observe the subtleties of vocabulary usage in modern Chinese historical scholarship and trace the footprints of changes between ancient and modern times.The other two articles concentrate on the differences between Chinese and West-ern cultures,questioning the characteristics of Western historical concepts and their implications by refer-ring to pre-Qin thoughts and examining the origins of ancient Greek ideas.They also combine the discus-sions of Collingwood's essentialism in European classical scholarship and Liu Jiahe's arguments on the re-lationship between logical rationality and historical rationality,forming the"Collingwood-Liu Jiahe The-sis".Based on the differences between Chinese and Western rationality,these articles analyze the character-istics of historical thinking.
