Research on the Design of Scientific Performance Tasks to Measure Scientific Higher-Order Thinking
The assessment of scientific competencies needs setting up appropriate assessment tasks to provide sufficient space for students to comprehensively apply scientific knowledge and demonstrate their scientific inquiry and practice abilities, thereby inferring the level of students'scientific competencies.Scientific performance tasks are distinguished by their foundation in real-world problems, contextual relevance, and open-ended,emphasizing the evaluation of scientific higher-order thinking through students'performance in authentic or simulated inquiry practices.Scientific performance tasks should be developed based on real-world scientific inquiry practices. The design framework of scientific performance tasks includes the following:Assessment indica-tors of scientific higher-order thinking, including scientific inquiry and problem-solving abilities such as asking questions and defining problems, finding evidence, forming explanations, designing and implementing solutions, etc.Typical performance tasks for measuring scientific higher-order thinking include experimental design, data collection, and analysis, scientific argumentation,re-verse engineering, producing works,problem-solving,etc.Rubrics that link students'performance on tasks with their competencies.Test data show that scientific performance tasks can effectively measure students'scientific competency levels and form evidence for diagnosing and improving teaching and learning.
