Exploring the idea of an acupuncture intervention programme for symptom clusters in breast cancer patients
Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women,and patients undergoing different stages of treatment can experience a cluster of symptoms that significantly impact their quality of life.Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of acupuncture in alleviating the adverse effects associated with breast cancer patients.In recent years,there has been an increasing focus on symptom clusters in research,shifting the field of symptom management from individual symptoms to clusters.Therefore,this paper analyzes and summarizes the symptom groups of breast cancer patients from different stages.Four groups of symptom clusters are identified:limb and musculoskeletal symptom cluster,psycho-social symptom cluster,hormone-related symptom cluster,and gastrointestinal symptom cluster.Based on our team's previous clinical research on acupuncture interventions for post-operative and post-radiotherapy adverse effects,as well as the consensus reached at the 2017 conference"Scientific Mechanisms of Acupuncture,Evidence from Clinical Research,and Prospects for Further Research"held by the National Cancer Institute(NCI),this paper proposes the utilization of acupuncture to manage breast cancer patients from the perspective of the four identified symptom clusters.Acupuncture intervention protocols are to be developed focusing on meridian differentiation and selecting and matching acupoints along the meridians and local acupoints,guided by the principle of"where the meridians pass,where the main treatment reaches".
