Research progress on lung barrier injury and traditional Chinese medicine prevention and treatment in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF)is a progressive pulmonary fibrosis disease of unknown etiology, characterized by repeated micro damage to the lung epithelium, abnormal communication between the epithelium and fibroblasts in the lung, leading to fatal accumulation of fibroblasts and extracellular matrix in the lung, thereby damaging tissue structure and lung function. The damage to the lung barrier composed of pulmonary epithelium and endothelium is considered a key event in the onset of diseases. However, there are few articles that summarize the process of different types of cells being destroyed, cell to cell interference transformation, and repair. It is urgent to summarize how traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)can play a targeted role.In this review,we describe the importance of the lung barrier in the development of IPF and its regulatory mechanisms through the lung barrier, including the integrity of the alveolar epithelial barrier, epithelial mesenchymal transition, damage repair of alveolar epithelial cells, and alveolar endothelial cells. In addition, this review summarizes the research progress of TCM and natural products in regulating the lung barrier to prevent and treat IPF,providing new ideas for in-depth research on IPF and the development of related drugs.
