Objective: To investigate the effect of dental floss usage for oral care on periodontal health after titanium alloy porcelain crown of the first permanent molar. Methods; A total of 152 patients in our hospital were enrolled in this study. These patients were underwent titanium alloy porcelain crown restorations of the first permanent molar and returned for visit one year after the restoration. Subjects were assigned to either group A or group B according to the compliance of use of dental floss. Patients in group A used dental floss to clean their whole oral cavity more than once a day, while group B less than once a day or once a day but not clean the whole oral cavity. Plaque index, gingival index were recorded before and one year after the operation and the difference between the two groups was assessed. Results; Regarding to plaque index and gingival index, there was no difference between the two groups before operation. However, both plaque index and gingival index were lower in group A than group B one year after operation, and there was significant difference (P <0.05). Conclusion; One year after titanium alloy porcelain crown restorations of the first permanent molar, periodontal conditions were better in patients cleaning their whole oral cavity more than once a day with dental floss than those did not.
