Current status of discharge readiness and its influencing factors in elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer
Objective To examine the current status and influencing factors of discharge readiness in elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer. Methods Elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer, hospitalized in the department of thoracic surgery at a Grade A tertiary hospital in Yancheng City,Jiangsu Province, from November 2021 to April 2022,were selected and investigated using the General Information Survey Questionnaire,Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale,Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale,Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale, and Social Support Rating Scale.Multiple linear regressions were conducted to analyze the influencing factors of discharge readiness in elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer. Results The total score of readiness for hospital discharge was 108.23±12.79 points, the total score of quality of discharge teaching was 96.50±11.76 points, the total score of uncertainty in illness was 117.05±13.17 points, and the total score of social support was 28.08±5.21 points.Correlation analysis showed that discharge readiness in elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer was positively correlated with the quality of discharge teaching and the level of social support, and negatively correlated with uncertainty in illness.Multivariate regression analysis showed that the educational level, types of complications, nutritional status, quality of discharge teaching, uncertainty in illness, and social support were identified as influencing factors for discharge readiness in elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer. Conclusion The discharge readiness of elderly patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer was at a moderate to low level.Patients with a higher educational level, few types of complications, good nutritional status, high quality of discharge teaching, low uncertainty in illness, and strong social support demonstrate a higher level of discharge readiness following esophageal cancer surgery.Medical staff should assess patients individually and develop targeted, personalized, and diverse health guidance programs and discharge preparation plans to improve patients'levels of discharge readiness and quality of life after discharge.
