Objective To investigate the current status of competency among rotating nurses in different campuses of a tertiary hospital in Nanjing and explore the factors affecting nurse competency.Methods A total of 97 rotating nurses from a tertiary grade A hospital in Nanjing from January to April 2021 were selected as the survey subjects.The Delphi method was used to develop a competency questionnaire for nurses.The current status of competency among rotating nurses across different hospital campuses and its influencing factors were analyzed through a questionnaire survey.Finally,89 valid questionnaires were collected,with a recovery rate of 91.75%.Results The survey questionnaire,developed based on the results of the Delphi method,consists of 5 dimensions and includes 37 secondary items.Based on the data collected from the survey questionnaire,the average competency score for nurses across the 3 campuses was 4.35±0.39 points,which was at a medium-to-high level.Among the primary indicators,the interpersonal communication dimension scored the highest at 4.58±0.39 points,while among the secondary indicators,the lack of scientific exploration thinking item scored the lowest at 3.83±0.73 points.Univariate analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the competency scores among rotating nurses based on different marital status,job title,monthly income,job level,personnel status,original department,current hospital campus,and current department(P<0.05).There were no statistically significant differences in the competency scores among rotating nurses based on different years of work experience,specialty nurses,and original hospital campus(P>0.05).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the marital status and personnel status are independent factors affecting the competency of rotating nurses(P<0.05).Among them,the competency of rotating nurses who are married is higher,and the competency of rotating nurses who hold permanent positions is also higher.Conclusion Marital status and personnel status are independent factors affecting the competency of rotating nurses.Among these,marital status enhances the life experience of rotating nurses.The hospital implements equal pay for equal work,which has played a role in stabilizing the flow of nursing staff,reducing the disparities in treatment between permanent staffand contract staff,and improving the sense of belonging among nursing staff.However,rotating nurses need to improve in areas such as interpersonal communication skills and knowledge and skills related to critical and severe conditions.Nursing managers can take targeted measures to improve the competency level of rotating nurses and quality of medical care.
