Dynamics of U.S.-ROK Security Cooperation in the Context of the U.S.Strategy of Integrated Deterrence
In order to cope with great power conflicts and the new form of great power competition, the Bi-den administration has put forward an integrated deterrence strategy as the core of national defense strategy of the United States. The integrated deterrence strategy embodies four-pronged strategic logics, including fu-sion of forces across the spectrum, aggressive denial strategy based on preemption, enhanced cyber and space capabilities, and strategic denial based on resilience. The U.S.and South Korea have strengthened security cooperation around these four logics, including the pursuit of integration of military forces, the pro-motion of denial of anti-missile cooperation, enhancement of cooperation in the cyber and space domains, and the strengthening of cooperation in building the resilience of the defense system and industry chain. The U.S.and South Korea have convergent understandings of security, complementary strategic purposes, and same strategic logic. Therefore,in the long term, the U.S.and South Korea's military cooperation will con-tinue to deepen. As the United States and South Korea continue to expand the scope of security, the trend of regional securitization will be further aggravated.Because the strategic purposes of the United States and South Korea are complementary, they both in the military level will be further integrated, and a common containment posture will be formed. The United States and South Korea are both basing their deterrence on the logic of denial, leading to an increase in the instability of regional crises.
