Effects of two conditioners on pH value and heavy metal absorption in paddy soil
Steel slag have the potential to ameliorate heavy metal contaminated soils, but their effectiveness and the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. The effects of amendments on soil pH value, heavy metal availability and rice absorption of paddy soil and their relationship with soil properties were explored to provide scientific basis for the development and application of amendments.A pot experiment was conducted on a paddy soil amended with two amendments(T1 and T2)derived from steel slag at two levels(T1L,T1H;T2L,T2H).Soil pH value, available silicon, available heavy metals, and heavy metals(cadmium, zinc, copper)uptake by rice as well as their relationships were determined.Compared with CK treatment, soil pH value of T1L and T1H were significantly increased by 0.64 and 1.02,while soil pH value of T2L and T2H treatments significantly were increased by 0.27 and 0.56,respectively(P<0.05).The soil available silicon content in T1L and T1H treatments significantly were increased by 5 and 22 times,respectively(P<0.05),which was higher than that in T2 amendments.Compared with CK treatment, the available cadmium, zinc and copper contents in T1H treatment significantly were decreased by 37.21%,45.57%and 95.30%,respectively(P<0.05).The soil available zinc contents in T2L and T2H treatments significantly were decreased by 31.55%and 30.67%,while the soil available copper contents were decreased by 6.53%and 19.32%(P<0.05),respectively.Compared with CK treatment, the zinc contents of rice grain in T1L and T1H treatments significantly were decreased by 23.44%and 18.12%,respectively(P<0.05).The zinc and copper contents of rice grain and straw had no significant differences after adding T2 conditioner. The concentrations of soil available cadmium, zinc and copper were negative correlation with soil pH value and concentration of soil available silicon;while the contents of cadmium in grain and straw were negative correlation with soil available silicon. The data indicated that the amendment with high pH and silicon content could effectively increase soil pH value and available silicon content, and reduce availability of heavy metals and uptakes by rice in such paddy soil.
