The Stylized Narrative of the Oral Tradition:Text Analysis based on the Western Miao Epic Jiang Geimeng
As an oral tradition of folk ritual narration, epic poetry relies on the oral transmission of singers from generation to generation, forming specific formulas and rhythms.According to the changes in the theme, the singer uses relatively fixed words, phrases and traditional syntax to flexibly grasp the variables and immutables of the epic, and smoothly combine the verses in a short time.In addition to memorizing texts, singers need long-term field exercises to apply those submerged story forms to a larger semantic group to form interrelated narrative units and story paradigms. In the application of oral program theory,he explores the formation process of epic creation, adaptation, and gradual finalization, and discovers the internal factors why singers can calmly perform grand epics.
