Whether Marxist historical materialism contains objective ethics has long been de-bated in academia. With a focus on the"debate over justice",Kai Nielsen has raised more fundamental moral and ethical questions.By refuting the anti-morality stance of Marxism,he defended the Marxist ethics through a careful examination of Marxist ideological con-cepts,and pointed out that Marx, when discussing the relationship between morality and ideology, employed the sociological dimension rather than the philosophical dimension of the ethics. The contextualist ethics proposed by Nielsen resolves the controversial issue of how historical materialism can accommodate ethics, which was raised by the anti-morality posi-tion.However,his interpretation of historical materialism from a contextualist rather than a philosophical standpoint leads to a certain degree of incompleteness in his theories and makes it difficult to provide a fundamental critique of anti-morality.
