The"May 21st Petition"in 1918 was a prelude and rehearsal of the May Fourth Movement,and also the first petition among Chinese students.The Student Patriotic Asso-ciation established in this petition was to some extent the direct initiator,organizer,and promoter of the May Fourth Movement.Due to its social and political background,change of young students'national views,and practical demands for political concern,this associa-tion was renamed into Student Country-Saving Association,which made sufficient prepara-tions in terms of ideology and organization for the May Fourth demonstration through a se-ries of practical activities such as establishing National Magazine Press,organizing a public education speech group,and convening the"May Third Evening Party"on the eve of the Movement.
