In the novel Sula,Toni Morrison creates a black community called"the Bottom"under the domination of mainstream society. She depicts the struggles of black warriors in"the Bottom",such as Sula,Eva,and Shadrack,as they strive to break free from white op-pression and construct their own identities. From the perspective of Bakhtin's theory of car-nivalesque,this novel exhibits three characteristics of carnivalesque writing:the carni-valesque"marginal"spatiotemporal dimension, the carnivalesque grotesque body, and the carnivalesque death imagery. These characteristics deepen the critical themes of the work and reveal the author's creative intentions.
