The Play and Learn Space:An Innovative Exploration of Family Engagement Space in American Public Libraries
The Play and Learn Space is stemming from the recognition of inequity in off-campus study time and disparity in educational opportunities among families of different income levels.It is an innovative exploration of the family engagement space within American public libraries.This paper adopts a case study and theoretical analysis method to analyze the family participation space in American public libraries.The Play and Learn Space draws theoretical support from Jean Piaget and Friedrich Wilhelm August Frobel's theory on early childhood play,Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory,and Fred McFeely Rogers's theory of child development(known as The Toothpaste Theory).Family engagement provides conceptual support for the Play and Learn Space on the one hand,the Play and Learn Space provides spatial support for the implementation of the concept of family engagement on the other hand.The Free Library of Philadelphia's Play and Learn Space,from the perspectives of"public space/environment","interpersonal relationships",and"game elements",offers valuable insights and serves as a reference for the development of family engagement spaces in libraries in China.
