Unravelling Factors Influencing Generation Y's Digital Overuse via Configurational Perspective
[Purpose/Significance]Digital overuse has a negative social impact on user well-being,interpersonal relationships, and work productivity.Exploring the complex mechanisms underlying the antecedents of mobile digital overuse helps users move toward moderate and meaningful human-computer interactions and mitigate the negative effects of digital technology.[Design/Methodology]Based on the framework of digital well-being,this paper constructs a configuration model of mobile digital overuse of Generation Y through exploring the combinations and interplay of personal, device and environment attributes in leading to digital overuse in Generation Y.Empirical data are collected via online survey to Generation Y respondents in China in 2023 with 158 valid responses. The necessary conditions of digital overuse are analyzed by NCA,and the conditional analysis of digital overuse are analyzed by fsQCA.[Findings/Conclusion]Three necessary conditions and four paths leading to digital overuse are found respectively such as digital literacy, perceived usefulness of digital well-being applications, and social digital pressure, and among which gender, fear of missing out, actual digital usage hours, and non-work time electronic communication expectation are the core conditions leading to users'mobile digital overuse.[Originality/Value]This study locates digital overuse behavior from a non-clinical perspective and confirms the asymmetrical nature of mobile digital overuse causality outside of an addiction framework, expanding the understanding of the mechanisms that generate digital overuse.
