A Historical Perspective on Geography of Ancient Buddhism in Shandong Province
As history went on,Buddhism in ancient Shandong Province generally showed such a geographical feature that there was a mountain with unparallel superiority and several other key areas.The mountain was Mount Tai and some key areas were Qingzhou,Mountain Laoshan,Mountain Wulianshan and towns along the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal.Buddhism in Mountain Taishan kept a relatively long-time prosperity in terms of famous temples,renowned monks and secular supports,which gave the mountain stable advantages over the other areas and made it the central area of ancient Shandong Buddhism.Those key areas besides Mountain Taishan featured in period-based prosperity in different historical periods thanks to various elements.The ge-ography of ancient Shandong Buddhism could be attributed to these factors including effects of famous mountains,temples and monks,geographical locations,historical opportunities and disputes & integration be-tween Buddhism and Taoism.
