The Transcendent Dimension of Xunzi's Thought on Heaven and Humankind
In addition to the natural dimension of heaven,Xunzi's heaven also has a transcendent dimension, which corresponds to the so-called"why"behind natural phenomena on the one hand, and the formal basis on which mans rule can be carried out on the other. The"distinction between heaven and man"is the realiza-tion that heaven and man have their own functions and are different from each other, and that this does not necessarily lead to the mutual separation of heaven and man. The"heaven"in"the division between heaven and man"corresponds to the"heavenly office",the"heaven of heaven",and the"man"corresponds to the"heavenly office",the"heaven of heaven".The term"man"corresponds to the term"mans duty",which is"the heaven of man".What Xunzi emphasizes is the unity and interaction between the"Heaven of Man"and the"Heaven of Heaven",which will lead to a more perfect state in cooperation with each other. What human beings can do is not to replace heaven, but to conform to the way of heaven,so that all aspects, from the basis of agriculture to political decrees and the unification of rituals and music, can be ruled by themselves and be in favor of the cultivation of all things.
