Syntactic Complexity in the English Translations by Masters of Translation and Interpreting
Syntactic complexity is an important means of assessing the quality of translated texts and the lin-guistic competence of translation learners. This study made a comparative analysis of syntactic complexity in the English translations by Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI)students and professional translators with 14 syntactic complexity measures. The results indicate that the mean lengths of clause and T-unit of the MTI students are significantly longer that those of the professional translators in English translations.A signifi-cantly smaller proportion of dependent clauses and a significantly larger number of complex nominals are em-ployed by the students. With respect to the amount of sentence complexity and that of coordination, the Eng-lish translations by the two groups are similar. And importance should be attached to the problems in the MTI students'English translations such as longer language units,a smaller proportion of dependent clauses and a larger number of complex noun phrases.
