Quantitative study on fat content of lumbar spine and paravertebral muscles in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by magnetic resonance FACT sequence fat quantification technique
Objective:To analyze t fat fraction(FF)of lumbar vertebral body and paravertebral muscle in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)FACT sequence fat quantification technique, and to explore changes and correlation of fat content of lumbar vertebral body and paravertebral muscle in T2DM patients.Methods:Thirty-one T2DM patients and twenty-six age-,sex-,menopausal status-,and body mass index-matched healthy controls were chosen. All subjects underwent sagittal and transverse MRI FACT sequence scanning, and the FF values of paraspinal muscles at the level of lumbar 3 and lumbar 3/4 intervertebral discs were measured.Independent sample t test was used to analyze the fat content of lumbar vertebral body and paraspinal muscle in the diabetic group and the control group.Spearman correlation coefficient and Pearson correlation coefficient were conducted to analyze the correlation between the two variables in the T2DM group and the control group. Results:The FF values of lumbar vertebral body and paravertebral muscles in T2DM group were higher than those in normal control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).There was no correlation between the FF value of lumbar vertebral body and paraspinal muscle in T2DM group(P>0.05),and there was no correlation between the FF value of lumbar vertebral body and left erector spinae muscle in control group(P>0.05).In the control group, the FF values of lumbar vertebral body and other paraspinal muscles were positively correlated(P<0.05).Conclusion:FACT sequence fat quantification technique can be used to evaluate the fat content of lumbar vertebral body and paravertebral muscle in patients with T2DM.Compared with the healthy, the fat content of lumbar spine and paraspinal muscles in T2DM patients have changed, and the fat deposition is more obvious. There is no significant relationship between lumbar and paraspinal muscle fat content in T2DM patients.
