The Reflection on the Linear View of Technological Progress:The Case of Electric Vehicle Development
Scientific innovation and technological advancement are not achieved overnight. On the contrary, these changes require the coordinated development and integration of various technologies simultaneously, the accumulation of technical knowledge over time, and rigorous testing through market competition. However, individuals often hold romantic views regarding the speed of technological progress due to their urgent expectations for scientific and technological innovation. This includes overestimating the speed, overvaluing the heroic role, and overlooking the market mechanism or specific contexts. This romantic imagination has also led to numerous myths, particularly in an era of intensified technological competition, such as the eagerness to achieve leapfrog technological development, the belief that increased capital investment leads to greater benefits, and overly advanced ethical discussions about technology.Using the development experience of electric vehicles as an example,we can conclude that although advanced ideas are essential, realizing technological progress requires a combination of research and development, accumulation, and market testing. Therefore,it is necessary to establish a pragmatic and evolutionary view of technological progress.
