Intra-Urbanity and a New Interpretation of Urbanization
Based on the previous concept of inter-urbanity,this paper further proposes the concept of"intra-urbanity"which refers to the concentration of urban elements such as space, resources, capital, technology, power, population, and the formation of the city's inherent, cohesive, and endogenous characteristics.Intra-urbanity manifests due to the rapid expansion of urbanization and its associated challenges. It is evident in the social relations and constructions within cities,as well as in the spiritual and cultural core of urban identity, which serves as a defense against urban maladies. While inter-urbanity drives intra-urbanity,the latter is also a result of the development of modem cities themselves.Understanding intra-urbanity should be situated within the framework of open and fluid urbanization, abandoning binary urban/rural thinking. While traditional city center squares constitute the geographical and cultural hubs of urban aggregation, the diverse urban spaces formed by urban expansion also require an understanding of intra-urbanity.The phenomenon of hollowing out in urban expansion reflects the lack of inter-urbanity.
