The Change and Trend of Taiwan-India Relations under the"New Southbound Policy"
At the beginning of Tsai Ing-wen's taking office, this Taiwan's leader puts forward a"new southbound policy"aiming at reducing economic dependence on the Mainland, guiding Taiwan's industries to develop southward, strengthening overall ties with ASEAN and India. With the coming into power of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014,the"Look East Policy"has been upgraded to the"Act East Policy",which provided an opportunity for Taiwan to develop economic and trade relations with India.Based on the so-called"perception of common interests",Taiwan and India have made certain achievements in the fields of political security, economic and trade development, education and culture. However,in the long run,the relatively poor business environment in India, the weak public opinion base between Taiwan and India, and Taiwan's continued high trade dependence on the Mainland have reduced the development space of Taiwan-India economic and trade relations; The democratic progressive party(DPP)authorities'refusal to recognize the"1992 Consensus"and their actions of seeking"independence"through multiple channels have seriously damaged the peace across the Taiwan Straits, and will fundamentally restrict the development prospects of Taiwan-India relations.
