This paper discusses the construction architecture and key technology application of video communication system based on Moving Pictures Experts Group(MPEG)video coding standard.Firstly,the development of MPEG series standards(including MPEG-1,MPEG-2,MPEG-3 and MPEG-4)and their important role in video communication are introduced.Then,the architecture of video communication system based on MPEG standard is described in detail,including front-end acquisition,video coding,network transmission,decoding display and other key links.In the part of key technology application,the latest progress and application examples of MPEG video coding technology,network transmission protocol,real-time processing technology and error control strategy are analyzed,and the advantages of MPEG-based video communication system in improving video quality,reducing transmission bandwidth requirements,enhancing real-time and stability of the system are summarized.The future development trend is also prospected.
