Memories of Alphaville:The Landscape of"Modern Times"in Haruki Murakami's Literature
Haruki Murakami and the American writer F.Scott Fitzgerald, though in different times and societies, actively explore the homogeneous problem that has plagued human society during the booming development of modern capitalism in their literary works. In his full-length novel After Dark,Muraka-mi,drawing on the metaphor of the French film Alphaville, describes the loss of personal feelings and memories of war in contemporary Japanese society. He then, resorting to the writing technique of dual narratives, reveals how people lose their normal lives and gradually fall into the quagmire of losing hu-manity.Finally,he attributes the evil nature of humanity, namely, the question of"original evil"to the modern times and its systems, and ponders over the authentic meaning of being a human in the technolog-ically advanced society in the"modern times".
