Abstract
The European folk song"Auld Lang Syne"is a classic piece of work by the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, and also the source of many famous songs of other places in the world."Auld Lang Syne"was introduced to Japan during the Meiji period and quickly adapted to"Hotarunohikari,"a musical educational material for elementary schools. The birth of"Hotarunohikari"is not only the microcosm of the integration of Eastern and Western cultures, but also the inevitable product of the ideology of modern Japanese imperial system.Although the melody retains the emotional theme of parting in"Auld Lang Syne,"the lyrics reflects the formation and change of the modern Japanese nation. On the basis of inheriting and developing the nationalist connotation of the original song,it shapes the national identity from the perspective of national territorial expansion.
