A Paradigmatic Shift:Early Brecht in Transboundary Writing
The transculturality of Bertolt Brecht in theatre is an ever-renewing subject in academic discussion. An interest in and engagement with Brecht's early poetic and song writings, particularly in the English-speaking community of the learned since the 1990s,opens up another dimension. This essay focuses on the transcultural attributes of Brecht's early poetic writings, and traces the ways in which Brecht moves across the boundaries between German-cum-continental Europe and the English world, thereby giving rise to transboundary writing, the constitutive features of which made possible his transcultural as much as trans-civilizational connection with other parts of the world including,in particular,China. This essay intends to revisit what may be called the Brechtian mode of transboundary writing, its historical connotations and contemporary significance.
