Exploring meaning-generating mechanism of spatial-form fiction helps to understand meaning mechanism of such novels,the aesthetic forms of modem fiction,and provides a basis for spatial narrative theory.Scenes,stream-of-consciousness narratives,imagery,and stylistic techniques are the four core categories of meaning-units.Scene-making is a literary means for creators to express individual's ongoing life experiences.Stream-of-consciousness narrative,imagery,and stylistic techniques can transform constituent elements of scenes into symbolic codes,scenes into imaginative spaces,and create images that blend materiality and transcendence.The organizational laws of meaning-units in spatial-form fiction are similar to musical counterpoint.Meaning-units of the same type are distributed chronologically in narrative time and are related by repetition,transitions,and juxtaposition,which can generate independent thematic clues.Different types of meaning-units are governed by simultaneity time consciousness and synchronously march in story time,related by causality,contrast,and irony.The interplay of meaning-units creates a"reflecting effect,"the mechanism of which is"historicization."
