Death,Singularity, and Responsibility:The Poetics of Death in Derrida's Late Thoughts
In the 1990s,Derrida paid close attention to the issue of death, and The Gift of Death is one of the representative works.Starting from the works of Patočka and Kierkegaard, and borrowing from Heidegger and Levinas,Derrida gives a unique interpretation of death."Death"bears two meanings:one is the non-economic character of"gift,"and the other is the end of life.As for the second meaning,Derrida in The Gift of Death accepts Heidegger's view of death's belonging-to-oneself,regards death as the basis of singularity and responsibility, and thus constructs the modern responsible subject. In the discussion of Abraham's sacrifice,Derrida not only turns God into an average other but also incorporates it,thus revealing the general aporias of ethical decisions. However, later in Aporias and Demeure,Derrida brings in the relationship between the other and the self, deconstructing the belonging-to-oneself of death, which implies the changes in his poetics of death.
