The subject of pleasure has recently become a mine field.Underlying this phenomenon are political, economic and socio-historical factors, along with the influence of some"avant-garde"theories.It is necessary, therefore, for us to re-examine the three propositions regarding the notion of pleasure:1)What is pleasure?2)Why pleasure matters?3)What pleasure can do?As far as Western literary theories are concerned, the most intriguing discourse on pleasure comes from Immanuel Kant who paves the way for those who, such as William Wordsworth and his likes, advocate the importance of pleasure and its extensive function. From Wordsworth to Frank Kermode we can see a line of thought which emphasizes that pleasure has a bearing on mankind's dignity and the mystery of life.We can also see a tradition which goes all the way back to Aristotle through Herbert Marcuse,Fredric Jameson and Terry Eagleton, which testifies to a continuous endeavour to broaden and deepen the function of pleasure.
