A Dual Allegory of Genre and Politics:On the Transatlantic Imagination of"The Specter Bridegroom"
"The Specter Bridegroom"is the only short story with European narrative background in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon,Gent.Washington Irving rewrote the prototype Lenore in a sportive and ironic way, aiming at challenging the British Gothic tradition by generating a new genre discourse. This genre competition was also linked to the other geopolitical text embedded in the story,in which Irving outlined for the readers a metaphorical map of political relations among the countries/regions of Britain, continental Europe,America, and Canadian colonies, referring to the complex historical context of transatlantic society at that time. Therefore,"The Specter Bridegroom"should be regarded as a dual allegory of genre and politics. In the post-Revolutionary era, this work projected the literary appeal of an American writer to reinterpret the cultural and political power dynamics across the Atlantic.
