A Literary Expression of the Modernization of Quarantine Science in Orhan Pamuk's Nights of Plague
The modernization reform of Türkiye is a recurring theme in the literary works by Orhan Pamuk.In his latest novel,Nights of Plague,the author has drawn attention to the significant role of the modernization of quarantine science in the well-being of Turkish people,revealing the impact of the outdated medical conditions of the late Ottoman Empire and the resulting societal anxieties.The novel highlights the tragic fate of Bonkowski Pasha and the systemic issues within Mingheria Island's healthcare system,addressing the internal challenges of reform from multiple perspectives,including medical infrastructure,social institutions,and religious culture.Through three phases of modernization of Mingheria Island,Pamuk has tried to explore the development path suited to the reform of quarantine science.By telling the story of the plague in Mingheria Island,the novel reflects on the origins of the reform,using the transformation of quarantine medicine in the late Ottoman Empire as a case study to discuss the importance of reconciling traditional values with modern ideas in the modernization process of Türkiye,and the possibility of their mutual integration and enhancement.
