Identity is a way for individuals to perceive their relationship between themselves and the world,which will affect individuals'participation in social interaction and their use of interactional strategies.The xu-argument contends that language is learned via xu and the continuation strategies,namely utterance completion,topic extension,and content creation,henceforth CEC,are essential to push forward L2 interaction.In order to probe into how identity might influence the use of continuation strategies,the present study collected a 25-minute conversation between J,a female ESL learner and A,a male foreign teacher,and conducted a fine-grained analysis of the relationship between the L2 learner's identity and her use of CEC strategies at different stages of L2 interaction.Results revealed that the L2 learner's identity was dynamically restructured during communication,and the L2 learner accordingly adjusted her use of CEC strategies to ensure successful L2 interaction.
