When reviewing dissertations by MA or PhD candidates or participating in their dissertationdefense,I found that most of the"literature review"in their dissertation is listing other scholars'literature without in-depth analysis nor evaluation of the findings of the literature.The research topic of the dissertation is likely chosen out of the unfair assessment of the literature cited.One reason for this conduct may be that the author of the dissertation is not sure about nor understandingthe intentionality as well as the rationality of the cited literature before writing the dissertation.To address this issue,this paper tries to put forward the"extension-abductive"approach to reading research papers under the guidance of the genre theory.Extension starts from Macro Theme to Macro New of a research paper.Abductive starts from Macro New upto Macro Theme.In addition,this paper discusses not only the realization relation between the stages in the research paper,but also the supervenient relation between the stages.This paper may have implications for discourse semantic analysis.
