Film interpretation is an indispensable link of the information exchange between producer and audience and the first step of film studies.Multimodal critical discourse analysis(MCDA)of film helps reduce the subjectivity, with which film interpretation used to be obsessed,by revealing,at the micro-level,what is represented by modes, how meaning is constructed in the interaction between modes and contexts in an event, and what are the social factors(power,ideology,etc.)behind.In line with MCDA,this study examines three episodes in Red Cliff directed by Wu Yusen to show how meaning are constructed collaboratively by modes to present a story of"Three kingdoms"that varies from the traditional.
