Harmonic Serialism(HS),a derivational Optimality Theory that has gained prominence in recent years, offers a new perspective in the analysis of Middle English Open Syllable Lengthening(MEOSL)and its phonological opacity hidden. This study delves into the basic principles and operational methods of HS,highlighting its unique advantages compared to traditional generative phonology.Specifically,HS demonstrates significant scholarly value and theoretical significance in explaining MEOSL.Furthermore, compared with Moraic theory and Parallelist OT,HS shows notable superiority in interpreting this phonological process.HS's descriptions and explanations, based on the markedness of phonological structures, not only expand the scope of morpho-phonology analysis but also confirm its explanatory adequacy in addressing phonological opacity. This paper not only deepens the understanding of MEOSL evolution but also contributes new theoretical insights to the development of generative phonology.
