中国传统江湖英雄形象海外生成考——基于赛、沙英译《水浒传》对比剖析

中国传统江湖英雄形象是绿林题材小说的创作核心,也是翻译的重心,翻译形象生成的具体轨迹有待详解.本文撷取形象学理论资源,基于赛、沙英译《水浒传》剖析江湖英雄形象的海外生成,结合译者生平经历、翻译事件发生的历史语境、翻译形象生成的互文网络为形象变异溯因.研究认为,两位译者尝以西方基督、骑士文化"格义"江湖英雄,比之赛珍珠对血腥逆叛情节的垂直还原,沙博理强化梁山之忠义,淡化其法外特性.两译本出版间隔近半个世纪,动态对比益于解蔽名著复译之于形象生成的重要意义.
Abstract
The image of outlaw heroes constitutes the focal point of Chinese Lulin literary creation,and a comprehensive explanation is required regarding the reconstruction of the image through translation.This paper,assuming the imagological approach in translation studies,analyses the overseas generation of the traditional Chinese image of outlaw heroes on the basis of Buck's and Shapiro's English translations of Shui Hu Zhuan,and traces the trajectories of image variation in the light of the historical context and translators'cultural backgrounds.It is shown that both translators consciously or unconsciously incorporated elements of Western chivalry and Christianity into their translations when handling narratives concerning outlaw heroes.Compared with Buck's hope for the complete representation of the bloody and rebellious information,Shapiro highlighted heroes'loyalty and righteousness so as to offset the extrajudicial nature.With the dynamic comparative analysis of the two translations published in the 1930s and 1980s,the realistic significance of retranslating literary masterpieces for image generation will be unraveled.
