Gossip,capital and characters'departure in Middlemarch
The artistic value and social function of Gossip writing,which is ubiquitous in George Eliot's Middlemarch,cannot be underestimated.From the perspective of literary sociology,this paper explains the correlation among gossip,capital and characters'departure in the concept of field and their sociological significance.Gossip in the novel manipulates symbolic capital,internal operation order,and self-cognition of the characters in the field,leading to the departure of the characters.The functions of gossip(i.e.information exchange,ego enhancement,social integration and social segregation)are exerted to integrate social capital and maintain collective order in the town.The analysis results show that Eliot displays a conservative attitude as an elite novelist in the face of social contradictions arising from modern industrial changes.By analyzing the sociological functions of gossip in this work,this paper explains how a community disciplines individuals,revealing the essential characteristics of internal integration and exclusion of dissidents amidst community-building.
