A Research on the Cross-national Attraction of Chinese Basic Education——An Analysis Based on 242 British Media Texts About PISA
In the governance of international education,rankings and league tables have played an increasingly important role.Due to the excellent performance of Asian countries,China being a representative,in the PISA rankings,developed countries in the west have gradually given up their biases towards the Asian education systems.The UK's adoption of educational policies from Shanghai is a typical example reflecting the cross-national attraction to China's basic education system.This study employs Phillips'theory of cross-national attraction to conduct an in-depth text analysis of British media reports on Chinese basic education.It finds that the enhancement of China's cross-national influence through education rankings is a two-way interactive process,influenced by factors such as internal dissatisfaction,political imperatives,and negative external evaluations.The UK,hoping to carry out educational reforms,has investigated the Chinese basic education system and discovered that its guiding philosophy,goals,processes,enabling structures are highly attractive.
