A Probe into Asyndeton in English and Its Rhetorical Function
While asyndeton,essentially a co-ordinating strategy,is found in all kinds of literary forms in English,it is generally studied by grammarians from the syntactic level and remarkably little systematic attention has been paid to the language feature of its deviated forms and a range of dramatic effects.As an intended linguistic choice made by the author,the invisible syntactical link lends itself a terse and delicate structure,constructing larger meaning beyond the text and carrying a certain weight of significance in shaping the style of a work.With a detailed study of the definition and common syntactic classification,this study brings to light the rhetorical functions of asyndeton as in speeding,building atmosphere,breaking rhythm,achieving unity,arousing emotion and unfold ing openness in different contexts.By decoding the hidden information carried by the sentences,this paper tries to illustrate the artistic purpose of the author,with the hope of improving readers'appreciation of the style of literary works and the creativity of the author.
