An Empirical Study of the Chinese Attributive Clauses with Ditransitive Verbs as Predicate Heads and the Co-occurring Syntactic Features in Newspaper Texts
Employing the linguistic data from 2004 to 2005 in the newspaper corpus"Wenhui Bao"of the BCC Corpus, this pa-per chooses 14 Chinese ditransitive verbs as objects of investigation, collects 2 378 attributive clauses containing these ditransitive verbs as predicate heads from the corpus data, and carries out empirical research focusing on the relativization ability of the argu-ments of the ditransitive verbs as well as the syntactic features co-occurring with these attributive clauses. The study comes to the following central conclusions based on the Chinese newspaper texts:(1)The patient displays a stronger relativization ability than the agent and the agent also shows a stronger ability than the recipient, while the tendency for the patient to surpass the agent in terms of relativization is stronger than the tendency for the agent to exceed the recipient;(2)Compared with other types of attributive clauses, the verbal phrase"verb + complement"without any inserted elements and the serial verb phrase"V gěi"appear significantly more frequently in the relative clause where the patient is relativized.
