Artistry and Commerciality in Museums——Taking the Vatican Museum as an Example
As a center for the dissemination of history, culture, and art, museums are important institutions for showcasing the development of national culture. On the one hand, museums undertake the mission of preserving and inheriting human art and cul-ture;on the other hand, the overall environment of the commodity economy era and the transformation of the art development focus have led to the commercialization of art. This article takes the highly representative Vatican Museum, which relies on historical relics and cultural sites to become rich,as an example.By analyzing the historical and cultural influences, religious beliefs, and national economic pressures that followed its establishment,it explores the relationship between artistry and commercialization in the develop-ment of museums. We aim to discern the opportunities, changes, potential problems and future prospects through the connection be-tween ancient and modern times.Meanwhile it is proposed to pay attention to the crisis brought by the rapid development of commu-nication and dissemination methods to museums, and to bear in mind the original intention and mission of art managers.
