Study on China's National Image in College English Textbooks——A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis
Building a national image is an important practice to achieve the goal of developing a great socialist culture in China.College English course shoulders the important mission of nurturing capable young people well-prepared to join the socialist cause.However,the construction of national image in textbooks has not been given adequate attention.Based on the corpus from college English textbooks,this study explores and interprets the construction of China'national image through Fairclough's three dimensional framework of CDA.By adopting a corpus-assisted method like keywords list,Graphcoll,and concordance analysis,it is discovered that the textbooks discursively construct China as a nation with technological innovation,sustainable economic growth,open and co-operative education system,and social equality and freedom.The discursive construction is a social practice in which the textbook planning is guided by a national strategy of cultural prosperity.Furthermore,national image construction in textbooks is attributable to the social and cultural factors such as China's national values and spirits.
